Independence grows step by step. Simple tasks matched to a child's stage help them feel successful:

Learning to zip a jacket takes far longer than having it done for you. Building in extra time and resisting the urge to jump in allows children to practise and succeed.

Praising effort rather than only the result helps children stay motivated when a task is tricky. A warm "you worked really hard on that" goes a long way.
