Building Resilience: Helping Children Bounce Back

Resilience is not about avoiding difficulty. It is the ability to cope, adapt and keep going.

Building Resilience: Helping Children Bounce Back

We cannot protect children from every disappointment, and nor should we try. Resilience, the ability to cope with challenges and bounce back, is built through experiencing manageable difficulties with support close by.

What Resilience Really Is

Resilient children are not children who never struggle. They are children who have learned that they can handle hard feelings, ask for help and try again. These beliefs are built through experience.

Secure Relationships Come First

The single most important ingredient in resilience is a warm, dependable relationship with a caring adult. Knowing there is a safe base to return to gives children the courage to take risks and recover from setbacks.

Ways to Build Resilience

  • Allow children to attempt challenges before stepping in
  • Acknowledge feelings without rushing to fix them
  • Encourage problem-solving with open questions
  • Let natural, safe consequences teach
  • Celebrate effort and persistence

The Value of Struggle

When a tower falls or a puzzle is tricky, the frustration is part of the learning. Standing alongside a child while they persist, rather than solving it for them, sends a powerful message that they are capable.
