Understanding the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
A parent-friendly guide to Australia's national framework for early childhood education and what it means for your child.

If your child attends an early learning centre in Australia, you've probably heard of the EYLF. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter for your child's education?
What Is the EYLF?
The Early Years Learning Framework — formally called "Belonging, Being and Becoming" — is Australia's national framework guiding early childhood education for children from birth to five years. Developed by the Australian Government, it sets out the principles, practices, and outcomes that all early learning services should work toward.
The EYLF isn't a rigid curriculum. Instead, it's a flexible framework that recognises every child is unique and learns in their own way. It empowers educators to design programs that respond to each child's interests, strengths, and needs.
The Five Learning Outcomes
The EYLF identifies five key outcomes for children's learning:
- Children have a strong sense of identity
- Children are connected with and contribute to their world
- Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
- Children are confident and involved learners
- Children are effective communicators
These outcomes aren't about ticking boxes or meeting benchmarks. They describe the broad capabilities and dispositions that support children to become successful, lifelong learners.
How Educators Use the EYLF
Qualified educators use the EYLF to plan intentional, play-based learning experiences. They observe children's interests and development, then design activities and environments that extend learning in meaningful ways. This cycle of observing, planning, and reflecting ensures every child's learning journey is personalised.
For example, if an educator notices a child fascinated by insects in the garden, they might introduce magnifying glasses, insect identification books, and conversations about habitats — weaving EYLF outcomes naturally into the child's genuine interest.
What This Means at Little Roses
At Little Roses, the EYLF is embedded in our daily practice. Our educators document each child's learning journey, connecting observations to the five outcomes and sharing progress with families through regular updates. We believe in the framework's vision: that every child deserves to experience learning that is engaging, relevant, and responsive to who they are.
Understanding the EYLF helps you see the depth and intention behind what might look like "just play." Every experience at Little Roses is designed to support your child's growth across all five outcomes.
